I WAS FIRST ATTRACTED TO Samoyed when, in about 1977 I saw a delicious looking Samoyed dog puppy sitting on a bar stool, in a pub, in Leeds, where I was born and bred. He was really cute
This being the worst reason in the world for buying a puppy and probably the worst place in the world, I of course bought him!
This was Nicky of Pudsey. He was the best introduction to the breed I could have had and taught me so much about Samoyed behaviour and what a Samoyed should, or shouldn't look like.
I then decided to do it properly and went to the top kennel in the UK at that time, Fairvilla and purchased Fairvilla Sudela. She did some moderate winning in the ring and I decided to mate her. The first litter to my own dog was a disaster type wise; it proved that it takes input from both the dog and the bitch to make a puppy. The puppies were all sold as pets but for one that I ran on. I can only describe the result as a white Siberian husky with the same tail set as a Sibe! She was rehomed and I tried again. This was the first Smiliesam litter, the affix being taken out with the Kennel Club in 1979
This time I took Mrs Danver's advice and used Noushka's granddad, Ch Fairvilla Taurus Bulba. This went well but fell short in one salient place; she produced a lovely litter of dog puppies; not a bitch to be seen.
So I bought a dog in. Sensible? Probably not but I did it anyway. This was Yenisei Taurus. When he was old enough, I mated him Noushka; result more dog puppies.
I was living in Lancing, Sussex at the time and we moved to Brighton.
I did a repeat mating of Noushka and Gelert (Y. Taurus) The litter was whelped with the help of Ranee Crawley who revived the only bitch puppy in the litter using methods the vet had never heard of! I gave in to the pleading of Michael and Mary Poore who were desperate for a bitch and let them have Smiliesam Snow Angel who lived a happy life on the South coast with them.
I bought another bitch in, did a close mating and found out what cleft palettes were. At the time hip scoring had just come in and a few shocks came out. Hips became a big concern of mine.
I then decided to go back to square one and bought another dog Silversam Snowivan. He could test the patience of a saint but did a lot of winning for me ending up with 1 CC and 1 Res CC. In the days where accumulation of numbers seem to supersede the continued welfare of a breed, by cutting down drastically the amount of stud dogs being used, It wasn't a bad tally; he won Veteran Dogs at Crufts every year but one.
He was used 4 times and produced two champions. He also perpetuated a fault I wasn't too aware of in the breed and I have been outcrossing away from him ever since. However he did throw good hips. And the scores below show Ivan descendants amongst others.

Showing
Our showing is spasmodic to say the least. I have never been a 'drag 'em around long enough and they will get made up' brigade. Or the pot hunting crowd.
I get really fed up with 'face' judging and am very choosy about who I enter under except when I am bored.
My greatest joy in the show ring is to see other people winning with my stock. I find the breeding side of the show world much more satisfying although it is frustrating. I also delight in seeing dogs I have bred in performance events. Samoyeds can do more than is generally percieved by UK owners.
